Edgar, a resident of St. Paul, has been through a series of complex surgeries, resulting in the use of only one of his eyes and ongoing discomfort. He discloses, “I have to be very careful how I conduct myself around the apartment. I know it by memory. I’m always in pain – it’s chronic.”
Though his current circumstances can be challenging, his grit and his cheerful demeanor keep him going, along with appreciating the full life he has led. At seven, Edgar moved from his birthplace of San Juan, Puerto Rico, to Youngstown, Ohio. He learned how to be a butcher and the grocery business from his dad. After graduating high school, he joined the United States Navy, serving until retirement.
While his career took him to many places, his family has always been important to Edgar. He loved teaching his children skills such as swimming and driving. Edgar also traveled to Florida so that he could take care of his parents, who had Alzheimer’s disease and lung cancer.
Since his health struggles, Edgar has tried a few different options for receiving food – though Help at Your Door’s grocery assistance service was the one that worked best for him. Edgar’s home has a lot of stairsteps, which can be especially hard to do while carrying groceries. He first learned about us through a flyer and was glad to find a friendly service that respected his requests. Edgar shares, “I talk to a person who is real. I like to talk to a real person in everything that I do. They listen [to me] and follow my instructions about how I wanted things done for myself.”
He appreciates our customized service and looks forward to connecting with Marilyn, who places his grocery order over the phone, and his delivery drivers. He explains, “It has given me an opportunity to talk with other people. I love to talk, and I love to answer questions. I’ve made great friends. They want to listen to what you have to say. They know your name, and I know their names. I just finished my order with Marilyn. I am always happy to hear her voice.”
