As students start their summer break, Varsha, a high school math teacher, returns to her volunteer role as a personal driver with Help At Your Door. After learning about who we serve, she chose to donate her time to our nonprofit, reflecting, “Seniors have always held a special place in my heart, so when my Google search divulged Help At Your Door, it was a no-brainer!”

Now in her third summer with the organization, Varsha dedicates approximately 10 hours weekly to providing crucial rides for older adults and people with disabilities. As a personal driver, she not only transports clients to and from appointments, social outings, and errands but also provides a sense of companionship and support, helping them in and out of the vehicle as needed.

She works with eight to ten clients each summer and looks forward to connecting with them as she drives. Over time, Varsha has built many fond memories of the clients she serves. She notes, “One lady always insists on giving me a treat (chocolate or cookie) every time I see her.”

The Twin Cities needs affordable transportation options for older adults, and people like Varsha help make our services possible. Varsha views her volunteer work as a two-way street. She elaborates, “[I see this role] as a way to say, ‘Thank you,’ to the seniors of our community, to hear their rich stories and experiences adds humility and perspective to my daily life.”

When asked what she would say to someone interested in volunteering with Help At Your Door, Varsha replied, “This is perhaps one of the best ways to give back to a generation gone by that is responsible for our very existence!”

Thank you, Varsha, for giving your time to Help At Your Door. We appreciate your efforts!
