Jim has been a volunteer with Help At Your Door since 2019. Jim’s experience supporting his mother is part of why he decided to give back through our organization. He reflects, “I saw the challenges of the elderly through the eyes of my almost 102-year-old mom as I helped care for her. We just lost her in May, but her passing was a peaceful blessing for her.”

While it is easy to become caught up in the troubles of today’s world, Jim believes that it is important to be part of the solution and to focus on the good in life. He explains, “I have been blessed with relatively good health, so I should give back to others. Also, rather than complain about how terrible so many things are, I like to feel that I am making a positive difference in some small way.”

At our nonprofit, Jim volunteers as a Personal Driver. In this role, he provides rides for individuals, helps them get into and out of the vehicle as requested, and stores assistive devices. He finds that being a personal driver fits well into his life, sharing, “I love the flexibility. I spend a lot of time with extended family, so this allows me to work around those commitments.”

He regularly gives rides to five people, donating six to ten hours each week to Help At Your Door and other organizations. Over the years, Jim has built connections with his riders and has grown to enjoy their company. He fondly remembers a lady who had multiple sclerosis and was previously a nurse with a remarkable family history in Minnesota. He recalls, “I looked forward to helping her out and hearing all her wonderful stories about the past.”

When asked what he would say to someone interested in volunteering with Help At Your Door, Jim replied, “Give it a shot! What have you got to lose? You can help as little or as much as you want. If you don’t like it, you are under no obligation – but you may find, as I did, that you love hearing people’s stories as you drive them here and there. Plus, you will feel like you made a difference to them.”

Help At Your Door appreciates all your efforts, Jim! Thank you for giving your time to the people we serve. Want to give back to your community through Help At Your Door?
