Help At Your Door offers a variety of volunteer opportunities—one in particular, Shopper, caught Maggie’s interest. She shares, “I’ve always enjoyed grocery shopping, and when I started looking at volunteer opportunities when I retired years ago, this one sounded very worthwhile, and I knew I could easily do it.”

For over a decade, Maggie has donated her time to ensuring that older adults and people with disabilities have access to food. In the Shopper role, she selects items at the grocery store based on clients’ orders, reviewing individual preferences, and making substitutions as needed. After picking the items, volunteer Shoppers partner with one another to double-check the accuracy of orders and assist in the check-out process.

She takes her role seriously, finding joy in making sure the client receives what they want and need. She notes, “There was one time when I was talking with a client about their order; the client was just so thankful for the service we provided and said she didn’t know what she would do if she didn’t have us to get her groceries.”

Maggie volunteers as a shopper for twelve hours a week. She enjoys meeting new people and building connections with a community of like-minded individuals united by a common goal and shared purpose. She reflects, “Over the years, I’ve worked with all kinds of volunteers, from students to older retirees, and it’s like a big family. You get to know them and, in some cases, make new friends. They are great people, and we have a lot of fun helping each other find the odd grocery item.”

Thanks, Maggie, for giving your time to Help At Your Door. We are grateful for your efforts!
